What’s Consuming You?
What does living your passion truly mean? Everybody talks about it, however it can mean different things to different people.
I have thought about this almost every day for the past six months and think I finally have a clear understanding of what it means to me.
Everyone is preaching the message, but to what agenda?
There are many preaching the message “you can earn a living from doing what you love”. Sure, this is certainly achievable and I am not saying it’s impossible. It is certainly not as simple as it sounds though.
Do you think you could earn an income from telling the world how much you love eating pizza? Well, perhaps. There’s an audience for every message, right..?
I believe ‘living your passion’ is more than telling the world about your interests and what you love doing.
I believe it’s about infusing what you believe in and enjoy doing into everything you do, your daily activities, discussions with friends and interactions with everyone you meet. It’s also about surrounding yourself with the things that give you motivation and the spark needed to get you fired up to take on the day with passion.
However this doesn’t come easy. Start by surrounding yourself with the things that empower you to think positively and in the direction of your passion and personal goals. Do this every day.
Where to start
I believe you need start small, but even more than that, you need to just start.
Just getting started with living your passion is often always the hardest part, but it shouldn’t be. You don’t have to go big, you just need to have a go.
I find it interesting that most people I speak to, don’t even take the time to think about what they’re passionate about or what they love doing.
Don’t wait until it’s too late, start investing in yourself and your future now. Start small and start with the beginning in mind.
Don’t focus on the end result or what success looks like, you can define that along the way once you obtain clarity and momentum towards your purpose.
‘Why bother?’ I hear you asking yourself…
My typical response to this question is usually, “what else are you going to do!”. That’s normally reserved for people I know though and isn’t really what you are probably looking for right now. In this case is, I believe you owe it to yourself to discover your passion and open yourself up to the opportunity of chasing it and discovering your true purpose.
Yes that’s right, I believe you and I have a ‘true purpose’. This is our reason for being (here).
Tony Robbins is known for the quote: “Your disposition is your gift”. I believe this to be true. However, we are all in a position to pass on to others our experience, learning, skills and knowledge. This is a gift and you owe it to the universe to share your gift with the rest of us. You can do this by giving back.
What steps should I take?
Gain momentum by documenting the knowledge, ideas, principles and skills you know well and would be able to demonstrate to someone else. Find that quiet place and document these ideas in any format you feel comfortable with - write, voice record or draw. It’s up to you.
Once you begin getting everything you know out of your head and on to paper, you will be in position to organise, package it up and leverage it.
Then, start giving back. You could do this by publishing, Publish wherever you like. It really does not matter if it is here on Medium, your own WordPress blog, Tumblr or Instagram. Just start publishing. Don’t be afraid to figure it out as you go along. Learn by making mistakes and understanding what works for you and your audience.
People will learn about you and what you stand for by consuming your knowledge, content and what you have to offer. However, they will happily pay you for the implementation of this knowledge when the time is right.
A final thought
While writing this article, I stumbled upon this post by Brianna Wiest — You’re Not Meant To Do What You Love. You’re Meant To Do What You’re Good At. It really resonated with me and feel it is closely aligned with my purpose for writing this article. Give it a read and see what you think.
“We’re doing people an incredible disservice by telling them they should seek, and pursue, what they love. People usually can’t differentiate what they really love and what they love the idea of.” — Brianna Wiest
Don’t let the fear of the unknown stop you from finding an outlet to express your true self and be the person you want to be.
In the words of John Lee Dumas;
If you want to be, do.
If there is something consuming you, let it out, make the time to find out if the juice of worth the squeeze. From my experience, it almost always is.
